My name is Bereket Kiflemariam Basa, born in Wolaita, Ethiopia. Growing up in a close-knit family in a region rich in culture and tradition, I was instilled with values of hard work, perseverance, and a thirst for knowledge. My parents, both educators, fostered my curiosity and encouraged me to pursue my interests in science and engineering.
I completed my early education in Ethiopia, excelling in mathematics and science, which laid a strong foundation for my future studies. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Construction Technology and Management from the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC) at Addis Ababa University (AAU). During my time at AAU, I developed a keen interest in infrastructure development and sustainable construction practices.
My professional career began in Addis Ababa, where I worked as a Site Engineer at a prestigious construction firm from June 2013 to January 2014. In this role, I managed various projects, ensuring they were completed on time and within budget. I supervised teams of contractors and subcontractors, maintained effective communication with clients and stakeholders, and implemented innovative solutions to engineering challenges.
From November 2014 to August 2015, I served as a Site Engineer and Engineering Lab Developer at Bezalel General Building Contractor and Bule Hora University. My responsibilities included developing technical training programs for graduate engineers, preparing tender documents and project cost estimates, and overseeing construction projects. I also played a crucial role in assisting procurement processes and mentoring junior staff, showcasing my leadership and teamwork abilities.
In 2015, I transitioned to an Office Engineer role, where I provided specialist direction on complex engineering issues, liaised with client representatives, and monitored subcontractors' work. This experience honed my critical thinking and problem-solving skills, essential for my future academic and professional endeavors.
In December 2015, I joined Wolaita Sodo University as a Lecturer in the College of Engineering and Contract Administrator. My roles included delivering courses in civil engineering, construction technology, and management, as well as mechanical engineering. I served as the Department Head for Construction Technology and Management and led the Engineering Lab Development team. This period was marked by significant contributions to curriculum development and student mentorship.
Driven by my passion for higher education, I pursued a Master's degree in Infrastructural Engineering (specializing in Transportation Engineering) at Széchenyi István University in Hungary. Currently, I am a Ph.D. student at the same university, focusing on Transport Engineering. My research aims to address critical issues in transportation infrastructure, proposing innovative and sustainable solutions to enhance efficiency and safety.
Fluent in Amharic and English, with basic proficiency in Hungarian, I possess excellent communication skills that have facilitated my interactions with diverse teams and stakeholders. My technical expertise spans various engineering software, including AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, MS Office, Primavera, and project management tools. I am proficient in financial measurement and project cost estimation, ensuring projects are delivered within budget and to the highest standards.
Throughout my career, I have demonstrated strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills. I am known for my ability to motivate teams, develop effective working relationships, and provide high-quality service delivery. My commitment to continuous learning and improvement drives me to seek opportunities for growth and collaboration in academic research and professional practice.
A passion for innovation and sustainable development fuels my work. I have been involved in several research projects aimed at improving transportation infrastructure in Ethiopia and Hungary. One of my notable projects involved assessing the capacity of multi-lane signalized roundabouts in Győr, Hungary. This research has contributed to enhancing traffic flow and reducing congestion in urban areas.
I am also passionate about sustainable construction practices and have been actively involved in promoting green building technologies. My work in this area includes research on the use of alternative materials and energy-efficient designs in construction projects. I believe that sustainable development is crucial for addressing the challenges of urbanization and environmental degradation.
Beyond my professional and academic pursuits, I am committed to giving back to my community. I have volunteered with various non-profit organizations in Ethiopia, focusing on education and community development. I have also been involved in mentoring young students and providing career guidance to aspiring engineers. My volunteer work has been a source of personal fulfillment and has reinforced my belief in the importance of education and community service.
Looking ahead, I aspire to continue my research in transportation engineering and contribute to the development of sustainable infrastructure solutions. I aim to collaborate with international research institutions and industry partners to address global challenges in transportation and urban development. My long-term goal is to leverage my expertise to drive innovation and create a positive impact on society.
